The Philippine Genome Center is a multidisciplinary institution that will combine basic and applied research for development of health diagnostics, therapeutics, DNA forensics and preventive products, and improved crop varieties.
The Center was established at the University of the Philippines during the 1246th Board of Regents Meeting last July 31, 2009 to utilize the knowledge of genomics in revolutionizing health, forensics, agriculture and drug discovery and related researches in the Philippines.
Beginning October 2012, the Philippine Genome Center will be based permanently in UP Diliman campus. Its main office and two core facilities, DNA Sequencing andBioinformatics, will be housed on the 2nd floor of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB) Building in the new Science Complex.
The Philippine Genome Center currently focuses on five research programs namely:Health, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Forensics and Ethnicity, and Ethics, Legal, Social Issues in Genomics Program (ELSI).
