R Graph Catalog

R Graph Catalog

Recommended by Stefanie Butland, LSI
The R Graph Catalog is a visual index of over 100 graphs from the excellent book "Creating More Effective Graphs" by Naomi Robbins. Click on a graph thumbnail and you'll see the figure AND all the code necessary to reproduce the figure exactly with ggplot2, the R package written by Hadley Wickham. This is a resource for people who want to make a good graph and kind of know what it should look like … but they could really use an example to get started!
You can get the code for ALL figures and the infrastructure that makes the app from this repository on GitHub:https://github.com/jennybc/r-graph-catalog
The R Graph Catalog is maintained by Dr Jennifer Bryan, UBC Department of Statistics, and the initial work was facilitated by an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award to Joanna Zhao.

JavaScript Native Interface

Coding Basics - JavaScript Native Interface (JSNI)

Often, you will need to integrate GWT with existing handwritten JavaScript or with a third-party JavaScript library. Occasionally you may need to access low-level browser functionality not exposed by the GWT class API's. The JavaScript Native Interface (JSNI) feature of GWT can solve both of these problems by allowing you to integrate JavaScript directly into your application's Java source code.

Elizabeth Mynatt

Beth Mynatt is the Executive Director of the Institute for People and Technology (IPaT), a College of Computing Professor, and the Director of the Everyday Computing Lab. Themes in her research include supporting informal collaboration and awareness in office environments, enabling creative work and visual communication, and augmenting social processes for managing personal information. She is also one of the principal researchers in the Aware Home Research Initiative; investigating the design of future home technologies, especially those that enable older adults to continue living independently as opposed to moving to an institutional care setting.

Combining Computing, Design and Healthcare: Charting an Agenda for Personal Health Informatics

Healthcare for chronic disease is the dominant cost for many healthcare systems, now and for the foreseeable future. The unique capabilities of pervasive technologies have the potential to transform healthcare practices by shifting care from acute to home settings, by enabling continuous data capture and analysis, by creating a network of communication and collaboration channels, and by helping individuals engage in their own care.  In the end, the emphasis is changed from healthcare and chronic disease to a focus on health and wellness.
In this talk, I will draw from a number of research projects that combine computing research, human-centered design, and health management theory to create promising approaches for promoting wellness, supporting behavior change and delivering improved health outcomes.

Visual Data Mining of Biological Networks: One Size Does Not Fit All

http://www.ploscompbiol.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1002833

High-throughput technologies produce massive amounts of data. However, individual methods yield data specific to the technique used and biological setup. The integration of such diverse data is necessary for the qualitative analysis of information relevant to hypotheses or discoveries. It is often useful to integrate these datasets using pathways and protein interaction networks to get a broader view of the experiment. The resulting network needs to be able to focus on either the large-scale picture or on the more detailed small-scale subsets, depending on the research question and goals. In this tutorial, we illustrate a workflow useful to integrate, analyze, and visualize data from different sources, and highlight important features of tools to support such analyses.

Points of view: Pencil and paper

http://www.nature.com/nmeth/journal/v9/n11/full/nmeth.2223.html?WT.ec_id=NMETH-201211

Creating pictures is integral to scientific thinking. In the visualization process, putting pencil to paper is an essential act of inward reflection and outward expression.

Visualization is vital to the scientific process. Relying on the powerful connection between thinking, seeing and understanding, exploratory drawing is critical for creating frameworks for knowledge.
