A Network of Genes, Genetic Disorders, and Brain Areas

http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0020907

conclusion is a small number of brain areas share common genes and diseases (hippocampus with 258 disases and corpus callosum with 213 diseases)

created a tripartite network of gene, disease and brain areas using text mining with PubBrain (http://www.pubbrain.org/) and disease genes from OMIM and diseaseome network from (Goh et al. 2007)

issues mentioned include:
  • bias towards highly funded disease tend to be highly connected diseases
  • may contain search results from non-humans
  • Kormogorov-Smirnov (KS) test that is used to measure goodness-of-fit comparison of the degree distribution vs. exponentially truncated power law (or cumulative distribution function CDF 1-F(k)) (k is the node degree) is unstable towards the tail of long-tailed distributions (hubs)
